Oh Gandalf
The Da Vinci Code movie has sparked a lot of interesting comments. I particularly like this one by Ian McKellen (otherwise known as Gandalf or Magneto). He thinks that the bible should have a 'fiction' disclaimer tagged on it. I also like all the reviews that are coming back saying that the movie is worse than the book and the book wasn't even good. I just think all the hype is funny. Has anybody else heard anything interesting on this? Or does anybody even care (as a Christian) that this movie is coming out, I don't. I haven't read the book, and I might see the movie for entertainment sake, based on the reviews maybe not. I think of it this way: The Code will do to Christianity what Godzilla did to the Japanese. It is just fiction people...How many people after seeing The Lord of the Rings went on a boat trip to find middle earth? Or how many people march into their wardrobe only to hit the back? Maybe I just have too much faith that people can separate fact from fiction, but then again those Trekkies are pretty convincing.

There may be plenty of ignorant Ian McKellen's who are taken in by Dan Brown's pseudo-scholarship and find in it an excuse to reject the Bible.
I think it's good as Christians to have a basic familiarity with the claims of the Da Vinci book and what the truth is, in case it comes up with someone that we know.
I've found some good info on the internet and in various articles, and I've heard that these 2 sources are good although I haven't read them:
Bart D. Ehrman (Truth and Fiction in The Da Vinci Code: A Historian Reveals What We Really Know About Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Constantine [Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004]) for matters relating to early Christianity
and
Carl E. Olson and Sandra Miesel (The Da Vinci Hoax: Exposing the Errors in The Da Vinci Code [San Francisco: Ignatius, 2004]) for post-Constantinian matters
I have read the book (thanks to Angie, yes I really need to get it back to you) and I found it very interesting. The ending was a little flat, I thought, but I can't wait to see the movie.(especial with Tom Hanks, I think he is exactly the person who should play that part) I too think that it isn't any different than Lord of the Rings in the threat to Christianity. It's just a novel, why can't everyone get a grip.
the buzz, oh the buzz that hollywood tries to promote. it really isn't effecting that many christ-followers that i know but my dad (being catholic) did give me a ("catholic response to the da vinci code")pamphlet that i thought was pretty funny.
i don't think that it's the reaction christians will have to it that is the issue. it's the idea that many people who are on the fence or don't know much will be sucked in by something that sounds legitimate and researched. in the regard that the author claims the history is true even if the story isn't separates it from any legitmate comparisons to other books like lord of the rings
